Keep the Tunnel Open!

Dear Montgomery County Council:

As a supporter of the Capital Crescent Trail, I strongly urge you to continue keeping the trail’s Wisconsin Avenue tunnel open. As you know, the trail tunnel has been open for over a decade, allowing users safe passage between the east and west portions of the trail. However, the Maryland Transit Administration has recently recommended it be closed to construct the Purple Line light rail project.

Keeping the tunnel open is a matter of public safety. More than 10,000 people a week use the tunnel – including students going to and from local schools, other pedestrians, joggers and bike riders. The county’s Department of Transportation has deemed the tunnel’s alternative route a “high incidence area” and poses unacceptable risks. Many students attending B-CC High School and Westland Middle School use the trail every day to avoid crossing Wisconsin Avenue. In fact, over 8,000 people signed petitions to open the tunnel after a boy crossing Wisconsin was hit by a car 12 years ago.

For years now, state and county officials have repeatedly made promises to the public that the light rail tracks and the existing Capital Crescent Trail would both use the tunnel. Now is not the time to go back on your word. I strongly urge you, for safety’s sake, to keep the tunnel open.
