FCCT Urges State Lawmakers to Halt Purple Line Funding

In light of recent developments concerning Maryland’s lack of a funding source for the Purple Line, Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail president Ajay Bhatt today sent the following letter to the state’s legislative leadership.

Speaker Michael Busch, Maryland House of Delegates

Mr. Tony O’Donnell, Minority Leader, Maryland House of Delegates

Mr. Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., President, Maryland State Senate

Mr. E.J. Pipkin, Minorty Leader, Maryland State Senate

Dear Sirs:

On behalf of Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail, a Montgomery County-based organization dedicated to preserving open space, park land and quality of life, we strongly urge you to reject any effort to provide further funding for the now $2.15 billion Purple Line transit project.

The Purple Line will add to our traffic woes. It justifies more development in dense areas thereby creating more congestion. Governor Martin O’Malley recently recognized 14 existing Metro stations located in underdeveloped neighborhoods. The state would be prudent and efficient if it focused on developing areas already served by transit infrastructure.

They Maryland Transit Administration’s (MTA) cost estimate for this project has already risen by $500 million over the past two years. This rate of cost overruns places the final project in the $3 -$4 Billion range. Meanwhile, the state has spent more than $100 million in Purple Line planning while the state’s current transportation needs lack funding.

We are opposed to an additional tax burden the state’s residents to pay for the Purple Line. Please use our transportation dollars wisely for current needs and find alternatives that will truly alleviate traffic congestion in our communities.

Sincerely,

Ajay Bhatt
President
Friends of the Capital Crescent Trail
